Lore & Background
Slaanesh was born from the psychic screams of the Aeldari Empire's fall, a god of sensation that craves ever-greater extremes. In Darktide, Slaaneshi forces infiltrate Tertium's underhive, offering ecstasy and power to the desperate. Their cults grow in the shadows, using forbidden music and narcotics to enslave minds, while daemons manifest where mortal will falters.
In Their Own Story
The corridor in Sub-Level 41 smelled of ozone and something else—something like overripe fruit left in a sealed room for a century. Kael pressed his back against the conduit housing and counted his squad's breaths. Three. Four. All four still breathing. Good. Then the lights flickered, and the hum in the walls changed pitch. Not louder. *Prettier.* A single, sustained note that made his molars ache with a strange, almost pleasant pressure behind his eyes. The daemon was close. He could feel it the way you feel a change in barometric pressure before a storm—not a sound, not a shape, just a *rightness* in the air that was fundamentally, terminally wrong. "Don't listen," Vex muttered, though her eyes were already tracking something at the far end of the corridor. The shadows there were moving with a grace that no geometry should allow. A limb—no, three limbs—unfurled from the darkness like a dancer stretching before a performance. The thing smiled. It had too many teeth and none of them were in the right place, yet the smile was *beautiful.* Kael felt his hand twitch toward his own face, wanting to check whether his own smile matched. He bit the inside of his cheek until he tasted copper and the note in the walls lost its sweetness. The squad moved. The corridor swallowed the daemon whole, and the lights steadied, and the air was only ozone again. Only. Almost.
Reader's Guide
Slaaneshi Daemons (generic enemy type) – Allegiance: Chaos. These are the recurring combat encounters the player's squad faces across multiple mission types on Neophytus. Key figures include Changerlings (fluid, multi-limbed daemonkin that shift form mid-combat and can phase between solid and gaseous states), Slaaneshi daemonkin with razor-edged appendages, and corrupted cultist warriors wielding blade-like weapons. Their goal in Neophytus is the same as all Chaos incursions: to spread warp-corruption through the hive's population, harvest psychic energy from the living, and destabilize Imperial control. They are the player's direct enemies in combat encounters, appearing in both standard missions and narrative-driven sequences. Distinguish them from Nurgle's bloated horrors or Tzeentch's arcane schemers by their emphasis on speed, elegance, and sensory distortion—attacks that feel almost graceful and leave the area smelling of something cloyingly sweet. Cult of Slaanesh (recurring narrative faction) – Allegiance: Chaos. A more organized, story-driven threat encountered in specific narrative missions. Key figures include cultist leaders who have partially daemonified themselves, and acolytes who have subjected their bodies to ritual modifications in pursuit of a twisted aesthetic ideal. Their goal in Neophytus is to establish a permanent warp-anchored shrine in the underhive, using the hive's dense population as a psychic fuel source. Their relationship to the player's squad is adversarial: the squad is dispatched to locate, disrupt, or destroy these cultist operations. They appear in narrative missions that emphasize stealth, environmental hazards, and boss-fight encounters against partially daemonified cult leaders. Unlike generic daemons, these cultists use cover, coordinate attacks, and possess unique abilities tied to their specific ritual modifications. Note: In Darktide's structure, Slaaneshi threats are one of several Chaos presences alongside Khorne, Nurgle, and Tzeentch. The player's squad encounters all four to varying degrees, but Slaaneshi enemies are distinguished by their visual language (sharp, angular, iridescent, fluid) and their emphasis on speed and sensory disruption over brute force or area denial.
